Just a thought... Have you considered adding permissions for the 'What's New' feature? If not doable, is there a way to eliminate emails for being viewable?

Also, have you ever considered opening up 'write' permissions for specific fields (i.e. the description field)?

The What's New area will no longer allow users to view email messages that belong to areas that they do not have permissions to access.
